Twist & Shout is a celebration of balloon artistry and community. As a convention, it provides a welcoming space for artists from around the world to connect, learn, and share their passion for pushing the boundaries of what balloons can do. It’s a place where creativity flourishes, ideas are exchanged, and artists inspire one another to reach new heights. Twist & Shout stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared joy of creating art.

 David Grist, a legendary balloon artist, not only because he had the incredible ability to twist balloons while drinking a Guinness, but because he embodied the very ideals that Twist & Shout represents. Renowned for his innovative designs, magnetic personality, and generosity in sharing his knowledge, David was a trailblazer who left an indelible mark on the balloon art community. His ability to craft accessible yet groundbreaking designs reflected his creativity, while his dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive artistic environment made him a beloved figure. David’s life and work perfectly aligned with the spirit of connection, creativity, and growth that Twist & Shout celebrates.

The Gristy Award, named in David’s honor, is presented annually at Twist & Shout. It celebrates excellence and innovation in balloon artistry, recognizing an individual who embodies David’s spirit of creativity, skill, and dedication to the balloon community. Winning the Gristy is considered one of the highest honors in the balloon art world, symbolizing not just technical mastery but also a willingness to uplift and inspire others—qualities David Grist exemplified throughout his career.

David’s legacy lives on through this award, as well as the many artists who continue to use and teach his techniques.  This year’s Gristy recipient is someone that I’ve had the privilege of working with on multiple continents. Someone I’ve known longer than just about everyone here today. Someone that I knew online before there were twister gatherings to meet at. And someone whose first words to me when we finally met in person were, “wow, I thought you’d be taller.”

 It is an honor that I get to present this year’s Gristy Award to Patty Sorell.
